University of Washington students moving onto campus this week

SEATTLE — Tuesday was move-in day for the University of Washington!

About 10,000 students are expected to move into campus housing.

“Oh, I’m so nervous but I’m also super-duper excited, there’s so many things to explore and see,” said freshman Emma Walker.

“When I walked into my dorm for the first time I was like, ‘what?’ I was shocked and excited because you know, it’s just this brand new chapter of your life,” said freshman Frances Sunderland.

Emotions were running high as parents said goodbye to their kids.

“Very excited, but also very nerve-wracking for her and this is my first child going to college, and she’s going out of state,” said parent Mindy Walker.

Some parents were excited to keep the tradition going.

“So we are full-on Huskies. We’ve been going to the football games already,” said Jason Thompson.

But overall, parents’ advice is to make their next four years count.

“Take advantage of everything you got here, all your resources. Have as much fun — this is the best time of your life,” said Walker.

COVID-19 impacted students the last two years. This year, freshmen will get the full experience with convocation back in person for the first time since 2019.

“I’m so excited, you have no idea. When I was in high school, we had Zoom and the mask mandate,” said Sunderland.

“I’ve had some professors email me to wear a mask during class, so it’s not definitely COVID-19 free, but it’s definitely a relief that I can walk around and show people my face,” said Walker.

For all those who need a little guidance, here’s a small food tip from a fellow Husky..

“Anywhere on The Ave is perfect. There’s University Way right here, that’s where a lot of students hang out and go eat,” said senior Zachary Perdue.
