Fans cheering Sounders goals at Champions Final registers on earthquake monitors

The cheers that erupted from fans at Lumen Field after the Sounders’ three goals during the Champions Final match registered on earthquake monitors, according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.

Station KDK (named for the Kingdome) measured the “Rave Quakes,” which show the three bursts of activity directly proceeding each goal.

To put that in perspective, the PNSN said the cheering was roughly 5x more than daily noise, like cars driving or machines humming.

While the shaking cannot be defined as a textbook “earthquake,” the data shows it was very similar to the “Beastquake” during the 2010 NFC Wild Card playoff game between the Seattle Seahawks and the New Orleans Saints.

During that game, Marshawn Lynch ran for 67 yards, broke 9 tackles and scored a touchdown in the 4th quarter.

The name “Beastquake” derives from Lynch’s nickname “Beast Mode” and the celebration by fans registered on a nearby seismograph.
