SEATTLE — Seattle police are searching for a suspect in a deadly shooting that took place outside a University District church Thursday evening during a young adult event, according to the Seattle Police Department.
The shooting happened just before 7:30 p.m. at Pursuit Seattle Church, near the intersection of 17th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 45th Street.
The University of Washington sent an alert to students warning them of the incident.
Investigators say a person inside a white Hyundai Elantra with black wheels and a broken-out window opened fire from the vehicle during the church’s outdoor gathering.
A man, identified by a pastor as a parishioner, was shot and died at the scene.
No one else in the crowd was hurt.
Police believe the shooting was targeted.
Just after midnight, officers responded to reports of a car fire in the 5500 block of Phinney Avenue North.
The burning vehicle matched the description of the Elantra believed to have been used in the shooting.
By the time officers arrived, the car was fully engulfed in flames and unoccupied.
Police said no arrests have been made.
This incident marks Seattle’s 23rd homicide of the year.
