LACEY, Wash. — Two children died in a mobile home fire in Lacey Tuesday morning.
Police said the victims were a 10-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy.
According to Lacey Fire District 3, a motorhome was found fully engulfed in flames on 21st Avenue SE, near Chambers Lake.
Crews were able to tackle the fire.
A 44-year-old woman was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Lacey police. Police have not specified the relationship between the woman and the children.
“When it started, it just poof, exploded,” said neighbor Eugene Cook. “I don’t think they had even a moment to get out. ”
Cook said the woman was asking for help finding the children inside.
“She had tried two or three times trying to go back in to help the kids, but the fire pushed her out,” he said.
Police and fire agencies are now investigating what caused the fire.
“Our hearts go out to their family and friends as they deal with this unimaginable loss,” Lacey police wrote in a press release.
Tributes began pouring in on Tuesday as neighbors and loved ones stopped by the home to pay respect.
Nichole Livengood’s kids knew the victims.
“They went to school together,” she said. “She had come over to our house and played a lot. It’s really heartbreaking to see that she’s gone and her brother. It’s just heartbreaking.”
Sarah Sullivan lived next to the family for about ten years.
“It’s going to be a very hard battle,” she said. “This is total devastation.”
A GoFundMe was created by coworkers of the woman who was hospitalized.
According to the fundraiser, “The devastating blaze claimed the lives of her two beloved children and cherished pets.”
