SEATTLE — A thick plume of black smoke was visible for miles after boat fire in Elliott Bay off the shore in West Seattle.
The US Coast Guard has confirmed that one person was on board but was not injured.
According to officials at the scene, a private boat got the person out of the water.
The person pulled from the water got a hot shower and declined medical treatment.
No one was hurt.
“It was black smoke, way up in the air,” said Don Mann, who captured the chaos on camera.
He and his wife walk along this shore every single day. They’ve never seen anything like it.
“We haven’t seen an orca in the 45 years we’ve walked along Alki,” Peggy Mann said. “So this is the most exciting thing for us.”
Dozens of people flocked to the water to catch the scene.
“Especially how cold the water is, it’s a miracle that everyone got off the boat safely,” said Robert Elder.
Fire officials said battling the fire was complicated because adding water to the boat caused it to start sinking into the water.
Seattle fire said they were not able to stop the fire and worked with the Coast Guard to tow the boat to Four Mile Rock and into shallower waters.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
