Cold, wet start to the week; pockets of rain predicted for trick-or-treating in some areas

The Highlights
  • Monday morning rain
  • Drier Monday afternoon
  • Wet end to the week

SEATTLE — From rainy roads to downed trees, it was a wet and messy start to the work week in western Washington.

Steady rain was over the area Monday morning, as a cold front slowly moved through. This rain will stay steady until about mid-to-late morning and could slow down drivers’ morning commutes.

On Sunday, a downed tree shut down shut down Northeast-Woodinville-Duvall Road.

On Monday morning, a downed tree temporarily shut down a lane on Market Street in Ballard.

Also on Monday morning, a downed tree shut down the northbound lanes of Martin Luther King Jr. Way near South Dakota Street.

“This time of the year, it starts ramping up with more storms (and) rain,” Dean Davis, a line crew foreman with Puget Sound Energy, said.

As the front moves through, a southwesterly wind will pick up behind it and interact with a westerly wind coming through the strait. This convergence of wind will lead to a convergence zone in King and Snohomish counties.

On Monday afternoon, most of the area will be dry, but trick-or-treaters will likely run into some pockets of rain in that convergence zone in the evening.

Overall Monday looks mainly dry, but be on the lookout for some rain from Seattle to Everett. Highs will be in the mid-50s.

We also need to keep an eye on the burn scar areas as the steady rain moves into the Cascades, with flash flood watches in effect through Monday evening.

On Tuesday, we’ll have scattered showers and sun breaks with the potential for some isolated thunderstorms.

We should be mainly dry into Wednesday with some chilly morning temps. Another weak system will move in on Thursday for widespread area rain, but we’ll start cool in the morning! Snow levels will start around 1,500 feet but then rise up quite a bit throughout the day.

Friday will be very wet as another atmospheric river moves in. The rain on Thursday is the warm front of the system and Friday will be the cold front with much heavier rain and breezy to windy conditions.

The heavy rain will taper off into Saturday with scattered showers for both Saturday and Sunday.
