Court documents: Spanaway man shot his father over parenting advice

Edward Vendell in court

New court documents detail what may have led a man to shoot and kill his father Monday in Spanaway.

According to the documents, 22-year-old Vendell Edward Henderson and his father were arguing over parenting.

The documents state that Henderson had recently gotten out of prison and was living with his parents.

The documents go on to state that Vendell was angry because he was having ‘baby mama’ problems and didn’t want his father’s advice because he was largely absent from his life because he was in and out of jail during his childhood.

When Henderson started screaming and saying he wanted to shoot people, his father reportedly told him he couldn’t speak like that in his home, and said he needed to move out according to the documents.

Henderson told investigators they argued for about five minutes before he pulled out a gun from under his pillow and shot his day. Henderson also told them he had been diagnosed as bipolar and schizophrenic, and that he hadn’t slept in three days due to anxiety, stress, and drug use.

According to the documents, Henderson has a prior juvenile felony conviction for assault and is prohibited from owning a gun.

Henderson was in court Tuesday afternoon and pleaded not guilty to murder charges.

A judge has set his bail at $1.5 million.

The victims family created a GoFundMe to help with burial and funeral expenses. GoFundMe has verified this fundraiser.
