KENT, Wash. — A section of road in South King County was closed Wednesday morning after a deadly crash between a car and a Metro bus.
The King County Sheriff’s Office was called to 277th and 83rd Ave. S. between Auburn and Kent around 7 a.m.
According to the sheriff’s office, a woman in a stolen SUV died after crashing into the back of a King County Metro bus. Three people on the bus were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
Deputies say the SUV was going more than 80 miles an hour when the crash happened, but why the driver was going that fast remains a mystery.
“There was no involved pursuit of the vehicle. At this time, we are unsure as to why that vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed,” said Sgt. James Ryan with the King County Sheriff’s Office.
The president of the bus drivers union, Greg Woodfill, says the driver of the bus that was hit is pretty shaken up, but physically okay.
Woodfill says that when crashes like this happen – even if the bus driver isn’t at fault - the driver still has to take a drug test and wait 2 or 3 days until they get the results before they can come back to work.
While that process is underway, many in Kent are still processing what happened.
“You have to think about and deal with what professional transit operators deal with every day,” added Woodfill.
The King County Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Response Team has taken the lead on this investigation.
