The Everett City Council has chosen a downtown site near the Angel of the Winds Arena for a new $100 million multipurpose stadium.
The facility will house the Everett AquaSox and host community events and, potentially, professional soccer.
The decision, made during the December 18 council meeting, followed recommendations from the Stadium Fiscal Advisory Committee.
The committee highlighted the downtown site’s greater economic impact and revenue opportunities compared to alternatives.
Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “MLB changed the game with their new requirements, but we’re committed to making an infrastructure investment that will boost our economy and provide a new quality of life amenity.”
In addition to retaining the AquaSox, the stadium could host United Soccer League (USL) men’s and women’s teams.
Justin Papadakis, Dthe USL’s deputy CEO said the downtown site offers “significant benefits” and could catalyze further development in the area.
The downtown option comes with a higher estimated cost of $100 million compared to $70 million for renovating the AquaSox’s current facility.
However, the downtown location provides more funding opportunities and avoids scheduling conflicts at the school district-owned site.
Planning and design for the new stadium will begin in early 2025, following council approval of the next phase of the project.
The city plans to limit funding to existing sources while maximizing private investment.
The AquaSox, a minor league baseball team that has been part of the Everett community for 40 years, welcomed the decision.
Co-owner Chad Volpe thanked city leaders and fans, saying the new stadium ensures “the next 40 years of affordable, family-friendly entertainment in Everett.”
