Excessive heat warning continues, cooler weather expected by Monday

SEATTLE — As temperatures remain in the low 90s in many places around the Puget Sound region, an Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect until Sunday night.

If the temperatures have been too hot for you, things will be cooling down a little starting Monday.

Here’s what to expect for the rest of this week and your weekend.

• Hazy skies and another 90-degree day
• Humidity declines Thursday to Friday — not as muggy
• Cooler air and temps heading into next week

There are couple noteworthy changes to our forecast in the Evergreen State.

Two fires in California — Oak and Washburn — are sending some hazy skies our way Thursday morning.

This is working out to technically be a good thing. Without any clouds the last couple of days, the sun has no barrier to protect us from its incredible heat. With the presence of the smoke aloft, we are now given a little barrier, and this will take our temperatures down about 2 to 3 degrees, which is not anything noticeably different, but it’s something, and a sign that we’re slowly heading in a cooler direction, with 70s coming soon.

If you’re concerned with air quality, unfortunately, the current heat wave is already impacting our air quality, with “unhealthy” levels taking over much of the Puget Sound. The haze will be high enough in the atmosphere because the fires are so far away that we should have little to no additional impacts. However, this could always change so we’ll continue to monitor the forecast with the latest conditions.

Even with a 2 to 3-degree cooldown Thursday, temperatures are still hot and both Excessive Heat Warnings and the Heat Advisory will continue through Sunday night at 9 p.m.

So, as I’ve mentioned this week, stay hydrated, stay cool, and avoid long exposure to the sun during peak hours. For those of you without air conditioning and still needing it, check local sale sites: Facebook Marketplace or online garage sales in your area have great deals and usually same day pickup.

On Thursday, one thing will feel a little more noticeable than on Wednesday: less humidity. Wednesday was muggy. Thursday leading into Friday morning, the humidity declines.

If you’re over the heat, there’s good news: it comes to an end on Monday with temperatures back in the 80s, and by next week we’ll be back to our “regularly scheduled programming” with highs in the 70s.
