Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson has ordered flags at state facilities to be lowered to half-staff through the weekend in honor of Patriot Day and in memory of victims of recent political violence.
In a directive issued to all Washington state agencies, Ferguson said U.S. and Washington state flags should be flown at half-staff beginning Thursday, Sept. 11, through sunset on Sunday, Sept. 14.
The move aligns with a presidential proclamation recognizing Patriot Day, the annual national memorial honoring the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Ferguson said he is also extending the order in memory of Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed Wednesday.
In addition, the governor directed the flag lowering to honor the victims of political violence this summer in Minnesota.
On June 14, Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were killed in an assassination.
That same day, Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were injured in an attempted assassination.
Ferguson said their deaths and injuries will also be marked by the recognition.
“Other government entities, individuals, and businesses are encouraged to join this recognition,” Ferguson wrote in the directive. He asked all state agencies to notify their field offices and facilities to ensure compliance.
Flags will return to full-staff at the close of business or sunset on Sunday, Sept. 14.
