Fire destroys 99-year-old Tacoma mill, firefighter minorly injured

TACOMA, Wash. — Firefighters in Tacoma spent the night battling a large blaze at Johnson’s Millwork along South Tacoma Way.

According to the Tacoma Fire Department, the fire started just after 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. By 6 a.m. Monday morning, 12 hours later, flames were still visible on the building.

Crews found the fire was burning heavily in the basement, meaning they couldn’t safely get to it, and pulled back to a defensive operation.

No other nearby buildings caught fire, as crews kept them out of harm’s way by saturating them with water.

The 99-year-old mill is full of wood, chemicals, and sawdust. Overnight, the roof collapsed, and KIRO 7 crews on the scene Monday morning watched as more parts of the building collapsed.

Tacoma Fire Department Battalion Chief says one firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital on Sunday night, but they are expected to be okay with just a minor injury.

Smoke could be seen from over three miles away.

About a dozen crews from Tacoma responded and will be on the scene throughout the day.
