PinPoint Alert Weather: Heavy rain and wind Tuesday night, Wednesday morning

A PinPoint Alert is in effect Tuesday and tonight.

Rain continues to fall this afternoon and evening, as an atmospheric river pushes over our area, with increasing intensity.

Widespread 1-3″ rainfall totals are likely across the Puget Sound lowlands with 3-6″ or more of rain likely in the mountains – especially across the Olympics.

There is a Winter Weather Advisory through early Wednesday morning over the Cascades, where 3-10″ of snow is possible before gradually transitioning over to a mix and then rain.

We’ve had around 5″ at Snoqualmie so far, with another few inches forecast before the changeover.

Snow levels will rise to 6,000 to 8,000 feet by late tonight and early Wednesday morning.

Through the lower mountain passes, an easterly wind will likely keep temperatures near or below freezing for an extended time increasing the risk of freezing rain and icy travel late tonight and early tomorrow morning.

The peak of the wind looks to be around roughly 10pm to 3am, but does vary a little from area to area.

A lot of Western Washington is under a Wind Advisory, including the Puget Sound area.

South wind is around 20-35 mph with gusts around 40 to 50 mph tonight and into the very early morning hours of Wednesday.

The advisories go until early tomorrow morning.

There is a High Wind Warning for the Coast where 30 to 40 mph wind and gusts around 50 to 60 mph are possible.

In Mason County there is a Flood warning for the Skokomish River, where moderate flooding is expected.

Rain will taper to showers quickly Wednesday morning with some sunshine breaks even possible for Wednesday afternoon.

Throughout the week, temperatures remain above average – highs in the low to mid 50s – with a chance for showers each day.

More widespread rain is likely to return to the forecast Saturday into Sunday, the first weekend of winter.

Winter officially begins early Saturday morning.

It does looks breezy this weekend with some more wind possible Monday, Tuesday and even potentially Christmas Day.

No white Christmas is in the forecast.
