PIERCE COUNTY — A former soldier has been sentenced to over seven years in prison for sexually abusing a child at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) several years ago.
Cameron James Taylor, 49, pleaded guilty in May 2024 to sexually abusing a 5-year-old. He has been in custody since his plea.
During the course of the investigation, prosecutors learned that Taylor left the Army in 2016 with an “Other than Honorable” discharge after he was investigated for allegedly sexually assaulting an unconscious woman in Germany and for attacking soldiers who tried to arrest him. He resigned instead of being Court Martial.
Once he was back in the U.S. in 2019, Taylor was convicted of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old neighbor. He was sentenced to a year and a half in prison for that assault.
However, during the investigation involving the child neighbor, other children who had been in Taylor’s care were interviewed and more victims were discovered.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Taylor convinced one of his child victims to not reveal the sexual assaults.
That victim told a family member that in 2012, Taylor had locked the then-5-year-old in a closet at JBLM and sexually assaulted them.
In asking for the 8-year sentence, prosecutors wrote to the court, “Taylor’s crimes reveal a man who lacks empathy and who prioritized his own pleasure over others’ pain. Taylor is also no stranger to the justice system; this is his third criminal sex offense. The government hopes that a 96-month sentence, coupled with lifetime supervised release, will prevent Taylor from reoffending again.”
He will be required to register as a sex offender following his release from prison. He will also be on parole for 10 years after his release.
