SEATTLE — Fred Meyer announced that two more stores will be added to their list of closures in the next couple of months.
The supermarket chain announced the closure of the Lake City Fred Meyer and the Redmond Fred Meyer on 76th Street.
This comes just a day after the announcement of store closings in Kent and Everett.
The South End Fred Meyer closing has been met with complaints of creating a possible food desert in the neighborhood where it is located.
“There’s not really like other grocery stores nearby. This is very convenient for us. We go there like once a day basically to get groceries,” said shopper Yousef Tirhi.
Tirhi lives near the Lake City location. Shoppers say the longstanding store has been a go-to staple in the neighborhood.
“It has strong memories for me, the store being here and also the access to it, I live a block away. My pharmacy is here. It’s just a shame what’s going on with the theft in the area,” said shopper Becca Martin.
Martin says she’ll now have to find a new pharmacy after years of depending on the store’s Lake City location.
“I was just thinking about that because the Safeway...I don’t think has it. QFC doesn’t have it. It just means another step that I would have to go out of the way in order to find my medication,” she explained.
Fred Meyer released a statement that every associate at the locations that are closing will be offered positions at other stores.
“Fred Meyer is proud to serve communities across Washington. Unfortunately, due to a steady rise in theft and a challenging regulatory environment that adds significant costs, we can no longer make these stores financially viable. Despite doubling our safety and security investment over the past years, these challenges remain,” said Frey Meyer, Spokesperson.
For customers, Kroger said the following grocery stores are nearby:

United Food & Commercial Workers Local 3000 (UFCW 3000), a union that represents grocery and retail workers, says the four closures in Everett, Kent, Lake City and Redmond will impact 703 workers.
“It’s unfortunate that all the people, first of all, that work here are gonna have to find jobs, and then all the other stores are gonna get busier, but the theft isn’t gonna just stop because they have to go to a different store,” Martin said.
Kroger, the company that owns Fred Meyer, released a plan to close 60 stores nationwide over 18 months.
“With the cost of living being so expensive, it’s gonna cause people that are stealing to go elsewhere, too. I feel like it’s not gonna really fix the problem,” Tirhi added.
These closures come after a failed merger between Kroger and Albertsons in December 2024.
