Success is a mess- and Deborah Horne shows us what it looks like.

Our own legendary reporter is the center of this week’s podcast “Hit and Miss with Monique Ming Laven.”

They talk about her decades of making news – and making mistakes.

And how that led her to Hollywood.

Even Robin Williams was bewitched by our friend and colleague.

But first came a childhood in the church—

A premiere in print—

And then triumph in television.

----------------------------------------

WE ARE ACCUSTOMED TO THIS POLISHED PRO--

WHO STARTED AS A NEWSPAPER REPORTER IN PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – AND DECIDED TO MAKE THE CHANGE.

Monique: How about going from print to broadcast? What was that transition like?

Deborah: Horrifying.

BOY, DID SHE FIGURE IT OUT.

AND SHE HAS THE HARDWARE TO PROVE IT-- SERVING OUR COMMUNITY FOR DECADES.

BUT THAT SUCCESS WASN’T ALWAYS CERTAIN—

EVEN AS VALEDICTORIAN OF HER HIGH SCHOOL.

And there was a young woman the same age we were graduating the same year in Mississippi, I believe I was school, I grew up in Virginia, and someone tried to shoot her

She’s representing, something that people perhaps didn’t think was possible, that you’re black and that you’re smart enough.

That was the only time I was frightened, giving any speech or being in public or speaking publicly. Because why couldn’t have happened to me?

SHE WOULD *NOT SHY FROM THE PUBLIC EYE… WALKED RIGHT INTO IT.

INTO THE SPOTLIGHT – AND EVEN THE STAGE LIGHTS.

BECKONED BY A HOLLYWOOD DIRECTOR

Deborah: Then he said, hold on a minute. And then out comes Robin Williams. Right. Well, I did not expect that.

So how do you get from Newport News Virginia to Seattle – and a film set with Robin Williams?

Deborah Horne is the only one who can answer that.

And you can listen now.
