Florists share tips on where to save on flowers for Valentine’s Day

Roses are red.

Violets are blue.

And both are expensive - especially this next week.

The price of roses blossomed to a range of 30% to 50%, but don’t worry, KIRO 7′s Gwen Baumgardner is here on this money-saving Monday with a bouquet of savings and tips for you.

Your best option? Head to the grocery store. Kevin Bassler, a savings expert with ‘Consumer’s Checkbook’ says these flowers can sometimes be about 50 to 60% less than what the retail florists charge for the same product.

Another way to save is picking up the order yourself to save on delivery fees.

“Most florists charge a big surcharge for delivering on Valentine’s Day, and also you avoid maybe trouble if there’s a delay, the flowers may not show up until the 15th,” Bassler said.

He also says that you could fall victim to a scam online, so your best bet is to shop local. If you do go the online route for flowers, use a credit card. That way, if there are issues, you can dispute the charges more easily.
