Domestic violence suspect shot by Pierce County deputy, condition unknown

Spanaway OIS

SPANAWAY, Wash. — The Pierce County Force Investigative Team (PCFIT) is investigating an instance where a deputy shot a domestic violence suspect in Spanaway on Sunday evening.

Around 5:34 p.m. on March 23, deputies located a suspect in a vehicle that was involved in a previous domestic violence incident with a weapon earlier that day. Deputies had probable cause to arrest the person for felony domestic violence harassment.

When they tried to pull over the suspect, they took off on Pacific Ave S, leading police on a chase.

The suspect soon crashed into a ditch, near the Auto Zone on Pacific Ave S. Despite the crash, the suspect still did not comply with deputies, according to investigators.

Around 5:42 p.m., deputies reported that shots had been fired.

It’s unclear if the suspect threatened deputies or brandished any type of weapon.

It’s also unclear how many deputies were involved the incident.

The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital. Their condition is unknown.

All law enforcement involved are uninjured, Pierce County public information officer, deputy Carly Cappetto, wrote on X.

Per department policy, the deputies involved have been placed on leave as PCFIT investigates.
