Fatal collision shuts down lanes on SB I-5 in Everett

One person has died after a truck allegedly hit a Vespa rider on I-5 in Everett early this morning.

EVERETT, Wash. — One person has died after a truck allegedly hit a Vespa rider on I-5 in Everett early this morning.

The crash happened along southbound Interstate 5 near State Route 526 and the Everett Mall exit. Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers were on the scene investigating the collision by 4 a.m.

WSP originally reported the collision as a vehicle vs. motorcycle crash. Later that same morning, a Washington State Patrol release stated that the rider of the Vespa was a 63-year-old man from Everett. He was allegedly in one of the lanes, while the Vespa was parked on the left shoulder of the highway, when a truck hit the rider.

The man was declared dead on the scene.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), three lanes of southbound I-5 were blocked for several hours.

By 6:45 a.m., WSDOT reported that traffic backups were extending past US-2 as the highway was narrowed to a single lane.

Drivers were told to continue to expect delays through Everett throughout the Wednesday morning commute.

The lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m.
