TACOMA, Wash. — A man has died, and a woman is recovering after they both were shot in the emergency room of a Tacoma hospital late Wednesday evening.
According to the Tacoma Police Department (TPD), the shooting happened just after 7 p.m. inside the emergency room of MultiCare Allenmore Hospital on South Union Ave.
TPD said the shooting appeared to have been targeted.
The bullet grazed a 21-year-old woman, but her boyfriend was killed in the shooting.
Police say that the pair got into a fight with a suspect outside of the hospital before the shooting, and the suspect then followed them into the ER before opening fire.
KIRO 7 spoke exclusively with the woman’s uncle, who said, “I know that she’s pretty shaken up because her boyfriend, I guess like, pushed her out of the way, so she just watched him get shot pretty bad, you know. I’m more worried about her mental and emotional state right now, more than anything.”
In a statement released Wednesday night, the hospital said:
“MultiCare Allenmore Hospital is currently on restricted access due to an incident in the Emergency Department. The ED is open for walk-in patients. Restricted access doesn’t allow for any visitors at this time. Tacoma Police are on-site investigating the incident. One person died as a result of this incident. All MultiCare staff are safe and unharmed.”
By Thursday morning, a representative for the hospital confirmed that MultiCare Allenmore Hospital was open and operating normally.
“The emergency department is open for walk-ins, but the waiting room remains closed due to a police investigation. Ambulances are still being diverted,” read the statement.
Later that morning, Multicare put out another statement, which read:
“Following the tragic incident at Allenmore Hospital, we extend our deepest sympathies to those impacted. The safety of our patients and staff is our top priority. Allenmore has returned to normal operations and is open to all patients, including those with upcoming appointments.”
Police say detectives and Crime Scene Technicians are actively investigating this incident as a homicide, and that no arrests have been made as of early Thursday morning.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Tacoma Police Department.
