A man was shot during a physical altercation Tuesday morning near Broadway and East Fir Street in Seattle, according to police.
Seattle officers were initially dispatched around 10:40 a.m. for a reported robbery, but investigators later determined the incident was not a robbery.
Instead, police said a fight between individuals escalated into gunfire.
The victim, a 25-year-old man, was grazed by a bullet in the forehead.
Seattle Fire Department medics treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to Harborview Medical Center.
The man is stable.
Officers temporarily secured a building in the area to ensure there were no immediate threats inside.
Police later determined the suspect had likely left the area before law enforcement arrived.
“(My girlfriend) said around 10 a.m. she heard a bunch of people arguing outside,” said a woman who lives nearby who asked not to be identified. “She’s like, ‘I think a gunshot just went off.’”
The woman told us the violence is not necessarily uncommon in this area. Over the weekend, she recorded video of fight involving somewhere around ten people. A gunshot was possibly fired.
“Last year it was really huge,” she said. “I think it was almost every other day that we would be calling the police.”
This shooting follows another across town just about 24 hours earlier, in which a man was shot in the head at the Northgate Transit Center.
“To see these acts of violence committed in broad daylight, what is your department doing to mitigate some of the risks that we especially see in the summertime?” KIRO 7’s Madeline Ottilie asked Seattle Police officials.
“It’s definitely alarming, but I can tell you, we have officers in every corner of the city. They’re always on patrol,” said Det. Eric Muñoz with the Seattle Police Department. “The detectives dedicate hundreds, if not thousands of hours towards solving these crimes.”
Muñoz said it’s also important that people call 911 if they see an incident occurring.
The number of shootings and shots fired is down this year compared to last. There have been 348 shootings and shots fired cases so far this year, according to Seattle Police Department data as of July 29. There were 438 as of this time last year.
No arrests had been made.
