Two deadly shootings occur just hours apart in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood; police chief responds

Editor’s Note: An earlier report stated that the second victim in the South Dakota Street shooting, who had been shot in the leg, was a juvenile. That report has now been updated to confirm the victim was a 23-year-old man, per Seattle police.

The Seattle Police Department (SPD) says they are investigating two fatal shootings that happened early Sunday morning.

The first shooting happened at around 4:12 a.m. near 1st Avenue South and South Dakota Street in SODO, SPD said in a release.

According to SPD, arriving officers found a 34-year-old man shot in the chest, as well as a 23-year-old man shot in the leg.

Both victims were brought to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition, but the man shot in the chest was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say the 23-year-old man is expected to survive.

Then, just after 6 a.m., officers responded to a second fatal shooting near 4th Avenue South and South Massachusetts Street in SODO, SPD said.

Police arrived to find a 35-year-old man bleeding in a parking lot and pronounced him dead at the scene.

SPD says officers found a totaled sports car parked next to the man.

During their investigation, relatives of the victim showed up and were very upset.

“They won’t tell us who it is,” said a woman who did not want to be identified. “And it’s my brother.”

The Seattle Police Department is still trying to determine if the two shootings that happened just a couple of hours apart from each other are connected.

Dakota Duran and a friend were attending an outdoor rave party when they heard gunshots.

He was about a mile and a half south on 1st Avenue South, near South Dakota Street, where the first shooting occurred.

“I’d estimate like 30-something gun, gunshots,” said Duran. “It sounded like multiple weapons were involved.”

Duran’s car was hit as a result of the shooting. Both his bumper and one of his front tires were hit by gunfire.

As of Monday morning, Seattle police confirmed that there had been no arrests made in either shooting. A man who was brought in for questioning for the first shooting had been released, and Seattle police have not yet said if the two shootings are connected.

Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes released the following statement on Sunday regarding the multiple recent incidents of gun violence in Seattle:

“Over the past four days, the Seattle community tragically experienced three separate incidents of gun violence, resulting in the loss of lives. On Thursday, we were confronted with a targeted homicide occurring in front of a place of worship. While the motive for this premeditated act is still under investigation, we recognize the profound impact it has had on those who witnessed this traumatic event, as well as the broader community.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, two additional homicides occurred. The first stemmed from an unauthorized and unregulated gathering, which culminated in the loss of another community member. Shortly thereafter, a third homicide was reported, involving an individual discovered deceased in a parking lot, potentially linked to a vehicle collision or altercation.

Our dedicated officers, detectives, and crime scene investigators are actively engaged in all three investigations, pursuing leads with utmost diligence. Our analytical team is diligently reviewing public surveillance footage and digital records to provide insights into the circumstances leading to these tragic events and to identify those responsible.

We want to reassure the community that we are committed to preventing further incidents of gun violence. Achieving this goal requires collaboration between the criminal justice system and the community. We encourage everyone to report any indicators of potential violence they may observe, as early intervention is crucial for prevention.

The Seattle Police Department continuously analyzes and screens all incidents of violence in our city, refining our strategies to enhance safety and prevent future occurrences. Our department holds meetings twice a week to discuss violent crime trends and to determine resource allocations based on data-driven approaches and assessed needs.

We urge anyone with information concerning these cases to call SPD’s Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000. Together, we can work tirelessly to ensure justice is served and maintain the safety and security of our city.

The Seattle Police Department remains resilient and relentless in its mission to protect our community."
