A 22-year-old man was stabbed in an unprovoked attack Sunday evening in downtown Seattle, according to police.

Officers responded to the 1200 block of South Jackson Street at 6:39 p.m. after receiving reports of a stabbing.

When they arrived, they found the victim with a stab wound to his lower back.

Police provided first aid until Seattle Fire Department medics transported the man to Harborview Medical Center. He remains in serious but stable condition.

Witnesses reported that the suspect, described as a Hispanic woman wearing a black shirt and carrying a brown bag, approached the victim, punched him, and then stabbed him without warning.

She then ran southbound.

Officers recovered the knife at the scene, which will be processed as evidence. A search of the area for the suspect was unsuccessful.
