SEATTLE — Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputies are asking people to avoid Weidkamp Road as a semi truck carrying 70,000 pounds of honey bee hives and live bees overturned.
The sheriff’s office says 250 million pollinating bees are now loose.
Weidkamp Road is closed from West Badger Road to Loomis Trail Road. This area is close to the Canadian border, northwest of Lynden.
It’s unclear what caused the truck to turn over.
Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputies, Whatcom County Public Works, and several bee experts responded.
According to deputies, Weidkamp will be closed between 24 and 48 hours.
While there is no general health risk to the public, anyone who is allergic to bee stings or has concerns should check the Department of Health’s page on bees.
Deputies will have an update when the road is reopened.
