The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is asking for donations after it began taking in about 50 sick cats and kittens from the Spanaway area earlier this month.

The shelter said that it’s taken in 20 of the cats and kittens as of Thursday, with more coming in every week. Many of the kittens are underweight and covered in fleas, and all of the cats have upper respiratory infections. Some of the cats’ eyes are crusted shut due to severe eye discharge.

The shelter’s staff has been providing the cats with antibiotics, fluids, eye treatment, nose drops, and high-calorie, nutritious food.

The shelter said all donations up to $50,000 will be triple-matched until Dec. 31. Donations can be made at the shelter’s website.

The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County dealt with a similar large intake of cats just last month. The shelter said that it began taking in around 40 cats and kittens that were found living in the same home on Nov. 30. Those cats were provided with spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations, flea treatments, microchips, medical evaluations, and placement.
