Tacoma police search for suspect who shot, killed 17-year-old boy

TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma police are searching for at least one suspect who shot and killed a teenager in Tacoma.

Investigators said it happened on E. 41st Street on Sunday night around 9:30 p.m.

A witness told KIRO 7 that her surveillance camera captured the violence.

She didn’t want to show the footage out of respect for the family, however, she did explain what she saw.

She said the victim was standing outside while talking with the suspect inside their car. Moments later, she says the victim ran away after someone inside the vehicle started shooting at him. The victim then shoots at the suspect when he gets near a vehicle, she continued.

KIRO 7 reached out to the Tacoma Police Department to get more details.

A spokesperson said they can’t release the surveillance footage due to the active investigation, however, she said Sunday’s death marked the fourth teenager killed in Tacoma in 2025, an increase from three in 2024.

KIRO 7 also spoke with neighbors, who didn’t want to show their face due to safety concerns, about the impact of this shooting on the community.

“It’s scary. It’s scary, very scary,” said Mao. “I feel like there’s not enough security patrol or any kind of security patrol around here.”

“You don’t just hurt the person you kill, you also hurt all the family,” a man shared his thoughts about the deadly shooting. “I’m really scared for them [children in the neighborhood] because I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t know if I leave and turn the corner, next thing I know I hear gunshots.”

An arrest had not been made as of Tuesday afternoon.
