Tacoma restaurant says driver unloaded a gun on their building

Bullet hole at Side Piece Kitchen in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. — A Tacoma restaurant says someone shot out their windows over the weekend.

Hailey Hernandez, the owner of Side Piece Kitchen says it happened just before 12:30 a.m. on Saturday.

“We were cleaning the windows for the morning when we noticed the window on the other side of the building was shattered out,” she told KIRO 7.

She says she thought someone might’ve thrown a rock into their business, but after reviewing the surveillance footage, she says someone drove by and unloaded an entire clip into their building.

“Truthfully, it’s pretty hard to say if this was random,” Hernandez said.  “I would absolutely hate to assume the worst in people and I don’t believe in victimizing ourselves in this, it could’ve been completely random, but when you are outspoken about social justice issues and about matters of moral rights in this climate, you can’t be too safe.”

She says four people were in the parking lot at the time, but nobody was hurt.

The bullets narrowly missed the electrical components and some gas piping.

Hernandez says the driver was alone in a 2000 maroon sedan with untinted windows.

She’s working with a few neighboring businesses to see if anyone has other footage that might’ve gotten a license plate number.

She says she isn’t going to let what happened deter her.

“One little drive-by isn’t forcing us out of Tacoma anytime soon. We are not scared of this area,” she told KIRO 7. “This is just a temporary setback and pushes us to do good for our community.”
