EVERETT, Wash. — The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office says that officers caught a teenager who took part in a marijuana shop burglary with five other suspects.
A burglary occurred at The Kushery cannabis shop in Everett around 2 a.m. on Sunday.
The burglars used a car to ram into the jersey barriers and then the building.
“Unfortunately, criminals find a way to get through anything it seems like and jersey barriers are not necessarily enough to restrict access fully, but they definitely slowed them down,” said Josh Estes, a representative from ‘The Kushery.’
Estes mentioned that they installed the barriers about a year ago following a previous break-in.
The suspects eventually broke through a secondary wall to gain access to the shop.
The entire incident lasted less than five minutes.
The masked suspects were said stole high-end products.
Police arrived and found that an empty car had crashed into the front of the store.
Police say a nearby stolen Kia Optima then drove off with the suspects inside.
With help from the Mill Creek Police Department, deputies began chasing the vehicle.
Deputies successfully deployed spike strips, and the car eventually crashed into a ditch near Maltby.
All six suspects got out and ran. K-9s tracked down a 17-year-old suspect.
The other suspects managed to escape.
The teen was taken to Swedish Hospital for treatment and is expected to be charged with burglary, car theft, obstruction, and malicious mischief.
This isn’t the first smash-and-grab for this location.
Estes says they have experienced at least seven or eight smash-and-grab incidents.
All of these incidents happened at their six locations in Snohomish County.
However, he believes that such crimes are not as frequent as they were in the past.
“I would say that we have not seen as frequent smash and grabs in the county… across the state and some other jurisdictions that may not be true… overall, I think the smashing grabs are down,” Estes added.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges in preventing smash-and-grab burglaries despite security measures like jersey barriers.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information that could help identify the remaining suspects to call 425-388-3845.
