SEATTLE — Two people were injured and one was killed in a shooting near Seattle’s Pike Place Market Wednesday night.
According to Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes, officers responded to a shooting around 10 p.m. at the corner of 1st Avenue and Union Street.
SPD reports that officers arrived within two minutes of the call and began lifesaving measures. Two of the officers were EMT-qualified, which Chief Barnes believes contributed to the outcome.
Chief Barnes reported that the shooting began as an altercation between three individuals. One of the people involved, a man, then pulled out a gun and fired at the two other individuals before running.
“When he did [run away], he encountered a private citizen that was licensed to carry. That private citizen fired his weapon, striking the suspect. We did recover the suspect’s weapon, and that private citizen is cooperating with us and providing a statement at this time,” said Chief Barnes.
Both victims and the suspect were taken to Harborview Medical Center. Police say the two victims were in serious condition, while the suspect succumbed to their injuries and died at the hospital.
Police say 1st Avenue and Union Street to Pike Place will be closed for at least six hours while detectives investigate.
If anyone has information, they are asked to call the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000.
