SULTAN, Wash. — A popular restaurant in Sultan is picking up the pieces after a fire destroyed the shop.
Vick’s Burger Shack has been around for over a decade – and on August 9, around midnight, it went up in flames.
“It was just devastating – couldn’t believe the amount of damage done. I think we’re mostly still in shock,” said Jennifer Vick, whose parents own the business.
Vick says her brother, who lives right next door, suddenly saw flashing lights and smoke coming out of the shack.
The flames destroyed just about everything inside, costing around $80,000 to $100,000 in damage.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Vick says it was likely an equipment malfunction and not arson, according to a fire marshal who said there will not be an investigation.
Making matters even worse, Vick says her parents do not have insurance, even though they thought they did.
They recently switched companies and after the fire, were told there was a clerical error – so no coverage.
“They had messed up on billing and there wasn’t a policy. They didn’t notify us or anything,” said Vick.
Vick has started an online fundraiser to help cover the costs of rebuilding. At last check, it has raised just over $15,000.
“It would be real easy to be crying and not know where to go, but the community is really rallying and carrying us through this. We’re grateful for them,” said Vick.
The family is now looking at possibly buying a food truck to start serving customers again.
