Enumclaw arsonist caught on camera setting 2nd fire in 2 weeks

ENUMCLAW, Wash. — King County arson investigators said the same family home in Enumclaw was targeted twice within two weeks by an arson suspect whose actions were caught on video — and they’re asking for help to track the suspect down.

At 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, the arson suspect — who appears to be wearing a headlamp with a strap — is seen on video taking time to pour fuel all over the front deck of the home while a family slept inside. In seconds, the front doorway is engulfed in flames.

Investigators said the family was fortunate to make it out of the house while people nearby bravely fought the flames with a garden hose.

Arson investigators said less than two weeks ago, Aug. 19, the same family’s car was intentionally torched the same way.

“It’s just a nice community here,” said Fred Gershick, who lives in the rural neighborhood. Gershick said people who know the homeowners said they can’t imagine why this is happening to a friendly family with children.

“It’s mostly anger,” he said. “Just shouldn’t be going on to people like this. Nice couple. Nice family.”

King County investigators said whatever the reason — the suspect must be stopped.

“Looking at these two events occurring less than two weeks apart certainly shows that these folks were targeted,” said King County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Meyer. “This is someone acting with purpose. We need to interrupt that and make sure we get them in custody.”

Surrounding neighbors who don’t have cameras tell KIRO 7 they are now installing them. Investigators are hoping something unique about the dressing or behavior will lead them to the suspect, but they hope someone who knows the suspect will call first.

“What we know is that these folks talk,” said Meyer. “They’re going to share their grievances. They’re going to share their motives. Whatever inspired them to do this crime, they’re going to talk. And we know their friends and associates have a conscience. They’re going to speak up. They’re going to know and see objectively how wrong these actions are, and they’re going to come forward.”
