Tanker truck carrying argon gas overturns in Tacoma, driver suspected of DUI

TACOMA, Wash. — A tanker truck overturns in Tacoma, causing serious injuries and forcing roads to be closed for hours.

Around 3:43 p.m. Tacoma Fire answered calls of a three-car crash with one overturned in Tacoma.

Around 4:43 p.m., WSDOT showed footage of the tanker truck on its side at the South Sprague Avenue ramp.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the tanker carrying argon gas, rolled on its side forcing the closure of all ramps to South Sprague Avenue.

Argon gas is an inert gas used in some light bulbs and for welding but is not generally considered dangerous.

WSP says there is currently no danger to the public.

The closure was extended from the intersection of South Sprague Road and South 19th Street to SR 16.

WSP said that two other cars were involved and those riders have been taken to local area hospitals for care.

Tacoma fire said that two patients were taken in fairly serious condition.

The driver of the truck was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Drivers are asked to find alternate routes as the investigation and road clearing are expected to last for hours.
