A woman in New York was arrested, accused of plotting to bomb the New York State Capitol building in an ISIS-inspired attack.
The FBI said Jessica Bowie, 35, had been under surveillance for more than a month as she communicated with a confidential informant who posed as an ISIS facilitator, The Associated Press reported.
FBI operatives gave Bowie money to buy ingredients to construct a nail bomb, as well as a gun, ammunition, and an inert explosive with instructions on how to use them.
Agents arrested her after she left a meeting this week when she got the weapons, which were in her possession.
Bowie had converted to Islam about five years ago and had made online statements supporting terrorism starting around May.
Officials started monitoring her accounts and became aware of her planning the attack on New York’s Capitol.
In the affidavit, officials provided photos of Bowie at the Capitol and buying the bomb-making ingredients.
The filing claimed that Bowie targeted the state senators because they make laws she said are offensive to Islam, the AP reported.
She planned to not only kill public officials, but also destroy “as much of the building as possible,” before going to Syria, Reuters reported.
The alleged plot was “an attack on democracy itself and one we will not tolerate,” John Sarcone, first assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York, said.
Bowie was arrested by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, NBC News reported. She currently faces a single charge of attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
