Pinpoint Alert: Damaging winds hit Washington, snow levels expected to drop Sunday

Pinpoint Alert Day

Strong wind gusts are expected into Sunday morning. It’s part of why KIRO 7’s meteorologists called a Pinpoint Alert Day.

Impressive wind gusts today were reported in many areas on Saturday evening:

Hoquiam 77 mph

Gig Harbor 56 mph

Sea Airport 51 mph

Tacoma 60 mph

Whidbey NAS 52 mph

Point Robinson 51mph

Power outages have been reported all across the area and there will likely be more problems with trees falling and gusty winds taking down power lines. To repeat: the wind will gradually abate.

Bands of rain will work through the area through Saturday night and bursts of heavy rain are possible. Snow levels are still expected to lower this evening and bring some accumulating snow down to pass elevations at Stevens Pass and Snoqualmie Pass. Stevens could see 2 – 5” of snow and Snoqualmie will likely be a mix of slushy snow and rain with 1 – 5” possible. Higher amounts on the order of 6 – 10” are possible above 6,000’.

Overall weather conditions on Sunday will be cloudy at times with fast-moving showers throughout western Washington. The snow level over the Cascades will continue to be around 3,500 feet and an additional 1 – 3” of snow could accumulate on top of what falls tonight.

Temperatures in the lowlands tomorrow will remain quite chilly and stay in the lower 50s on Sunday. Not much improvement in the temperature pattern is expected next week. We could have isolated rain showers on Monday and then some rainy weather continues through the week with some periods of snow or rain/snow at the passes.
